There is a 2 mm gap in all 4 sides between the base and the lid. This is a clever intentional design meant to allow free flow of air into and away from the Pi in all 4 directions. The bottom also has multiple holes to allow free flow of air from the bottom of the case. The case stands a few millimetres raised from the surface, thus allowing adequate amount of air to flow in and out of the bottom surface of the case.
